Postman accused of stealing Rs 57, proven innocent after 29 years

Umakant Mishra was accused of pocketing a money order for Rs 57.60 and was immediately suspended from his job.

KANPUR: A postman in Uttar Pradesh has been cleared of theft charges after 29 years of court battles, CNN IBN reports.

Umakant Mishra, a postman working at Harjinder Nagar Post office in Kanpur in the 1980s, was accused of pocketing a money order for Rs 57.60 and was immediately suspended from his job.

Mishra had to undergo the ordeal of attending almost 350 Court hearings in last three decades.

Twenty-nine years later, the ordeal ended for Mishra as the Court finally declared him not guilty. However Mishra not only lost his livelihood but also his self-respect. His family members too had to face the humiliation of the false charges levelled against him.

According to the CNN IBN report, the civil society now has demanded compensation and justice for the ex-postman for his sufferings.
